5 out of 5 hearts!
Y’all! I stumbled upon this book at BAM (books-a-million). And I never expected my life to be changed. I did not hear about this book or have seen any advertisement besides that first time and it’s placement being in The NY Times Best Sellers row. I grabbed it and once I began reading, I COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN!
Ladies and Gents…(clears throat) expect to be blown away! Red Queen is basically a dang dynamite in your mouth and you just don’t know when it will explode.
This is a world divided by blood – red or silver.
The Reds are commoners, ruled by a Silver elite in possession of god-like superpowers. And to Mare Barrow, a seventeen-year-old Red girl from the poverty-stricken Stilts, it seems like nothing will ever change.
That is, until she finds herself working in the Silver Palace. Here, surrounded by the people she hates the most, Mare discovers that, despite her red blood, she possesses a deadly power of her own. One that threatens to destroy the balance of power.
Fearful of Mare’s potential, the Silvers hide her in plain view, declaring her a long-lost Silver princess, now engaged to a Silver prince. Despite knowing that one misstep would mean her death, Mare works silently to help the Red Guard, a militant resistance group, and bring down the Silver regime.
But this is a world of betrayal and lies, and Mare has entered a dangerous dance – Reds against Silvers, prince against prince, and Mare against her own heart.
Be still my beating heart, I have to write this review. Yes, this how you will feel once you are finished reading Red Queen. It’ll turn into an addiction that unfortunately, the only way to cure it, you have to read the next book in the series to know what happens next.
I describe this book as X-Men/Hunger Games/ Divergent all rolled into one. All the action, all the romance ( love triangle), the rebellion, and special unique powers, ALL IN ONE SERIES. Starting with this book.
We’re introduced to Mare Barrow. Truthfully, her name reminds me of bone marrow. I don’t know why? 😉 Anyways, a 17 year old girl living in the poor district called Stilts. Mare’s blood is red, meaning she is a commoner and has no special powers. We meet her family and a lifelong childhood friend/boyfriend, who are also red blooded.
Monarchy rules he kingdom. They are considered God-like. With blood the color of Silver and powers that distinguish their “House”, this Silver Elite rule with an iron fist. The districts are so poor, the food is rationed and working will only cover the bare minimum. Due to this Mare will sometimes have to steal (most of the time).
This first book leads you into a dystopian world of love, friendship, betrayal and shocking twist and turns. Mare Barrow stumbles into this new world where she is amongst the gods, and now she must be one.
Path between a red and silver cross, sparks fly, ignite and burn.
